#57798 Legal Update: Driving in 2015

Posted by jam53ice on 08 January 2015 - 01:54 PM

January 2015

Patriotic Driving Licences

The Union Flag will be displayed on driving licences issued after January 1, 2015. The changes will apply to motorists in England, Scotland and Wales and is designed to provide road users with a symbolic sign of their national identity.

Driverless Cars

Another new law introduced in January 2015 allows the operation of driverless cars on UK roads for the first time. The areas selected by the Government for trials are Bristol, the London borough of Greenwich, and Milton Keynes and Coventry, which are working together on one project.

Seatbelts

From 2015, medical staff treating patients on the move are now exempt from seatbelt laws introduced in 1993 if they are “providing medical attention or treatment to a patient which due to its nature or the medical situation of the patient cannot be delayed”.

Work Can “Benefit In Kind”

The “benefit in kind” to someone who is able to use their work’s van for personal use has now increased to £3,150 for Income Tax purposes.

March 2015

Drug Driving

A new law on driving under the influence of certain drugs, including some common medicines, will come into force on 2 March 2015.

The law states that it is an offence to drive with certain drugs above specified limits in your system, even if your driving ability is not impaired.

There are, however, medical defences for people caught driving under the influence of properly prescribed drugs.

The new law mainly relates to prescription medications that are sometimes abused, such as medicines used to treat extreme pain, drug addiction and multiple sclerosis.

June 2015

Paper Driving Licence

From 8 June 2015, the photocard licence counterpart will not be valid and will no longer be issued by DVLA.

Endorsements and penalty points will instead be recorded on DVLA’s driver record.

Entitlements/penalty points and the status of your driving licence won’t change.

October 2015

Smoking In Cars

Smoking in cars carrying children will become illegal from 1 October 2015.

The measure will criminalise smoking by parents, carers or other adults in a car carrying anyone under the age of 18.

The punishment is expected to range from a £60 fine or points on a motorist’s licence to as much as £10,000 for drivers who fail to stop passengers smoking in a vehicle carrying a child.

Posted by jam53ice on 05 February 2015 - 09:52 AM

Hi All.

You may have noticed that you can no longer purchase tickets for Fiesta In The Park

This is because Fordguides.co.uk will not be attending this year.

This isn't a decision I have taken lightly and I am disappointment at the lack of interest.

#57367 Server Scheduled Maintenance

Posted by trecoll on 21 October 2014 - 03:46 PM

The server occasionally needs maintenance work, which usually involves reboots. Reboots on our server, are generally very quick. But some maintenance does require multiple reboots.

From now on, I reserve the right to perform maintenance work on the server, with no warning. This maintenance work will only ever take place on Weekdays between 08:00 and 09:00.

If you visit the site during these times and find yourself unable to access the page, please try again later.

#56587 Management Changes

Posted by trecoll on 29 April 2014 - 07:47 AM

Dear All,

Some of you noticed a while back, Jamie (Jam53ice) became a full member of staff. Now is the time for me to explain the reasoning behind this.

The site costs approximately £250 a year to run! Unfortunately, I am not in a financial position to cover this at the moment (Having recently got engaged etc!).
As much help towards this as the membership and adverts provide, this doesn't even cover 50% most years - we see about £60 from Google every 3 years for the adverts!

Therefore, rather than me closing the site, or reverting to lesser software with adverts on 90% of each page and/or lesser server hardware, Jamie has kindly offered to take over the main running of the site (effective 30/04/14), including the financial commitment.
Rather than moving the site to another server, thus causing up to 2 days downtime, we will keep it on the server that I currently rent (and use for other sites) and FordGuides will cover a relative portion of my costs.

I will stay on the staff, as a technical advisor. So should any problems, like the other day, occur on the server itself it will be my responsibility to sort out. But the IPB Software and any add-ons/themes etc will be for Jamie.
In a few years time, my position may change back for the better, but it will still be 100% Jamie's decision to swap back "ownership" if he so chooses, or go half each. I don't mind.

Although I myself no longer own a Ford, I'm hoping I'll still be welcome (hehe) as my better half does (for which I pay the bills!) and I like to consider myself to have a great and varied knowledge, particularly of Mk4 and 5 Fiestas!

I plan to give Jamie a few months to fall into the role, and scream at me for any help, before I fade away for a short break.

But remember.

Peace out!
Rob

#56460 Downtime this morning

Posted by trecoll on 08 April 2014 - 11:23 AM

Sorry for the downtime experienced this morning.

I'm still not 100% sure what the issue was, nor am I convinced that its fixed and won't happen again.

I am looking into the server logs and settings to try and figure it out and will keep you updated,

Rob

Edit: It could however be related to server maintenance, but I'm not sure.

We wish to inform our Customers with Virtual Private Servers, that in an effort to improve System performance and reliability, we shall be carrying out maintenance on our host servers between the hours of 00.30 and 03.00 starting on Monday the 7th April and continuing each evening until the maintenance is complete. We expect this maintenance to take up to 7 days to complete.

During this maintenance time, Customers VPS images, websites and email will be affected.

We would advise our customers to ensure that a full and recent backup of their Website and Data is made before this maintenance takes place. This is precautionary advice as it is unlikely that any data will be lost.

During the maintenance window the range of servers that are being worked on that evening will be posted on this page each morning.

Any other information received from our System engineers in regards to the progress of this maintenance will be posted on this status page also.

Update:
Maintenance carried out last evening on 2 host servers was completed successfully with no problems.
This evening we will continue the work on 2 more host servers.

#50960 Stickers!

Posted by trecoll on 16 October 2012 - 08:29 AM

I'm looking at getting our current logo made up as stickers.

I will be looking into getting two runs made, one in white and one in another colour.

It won't look exactly like above, as I suspect the slogan line will need to be slightly thicker to work.

They will be sized about the same as the original F4OC stickers, in that they will be approximately 300mm wide, with a height of approximately 150mm.

They will be sold in pairs of the same colour, at (I'm hoping) about £2.50 inc p&p

Please use the poll in this thread to vote for your preferences.

#57888 Possible Server Downtime

Posted by trecoll on 21 February 2015 - 10:35 PM

FordGuides.co.uk is hosted on a Virtual Server, which resides on physical hardware.

The hosting company have informed me that slowness of all websites on my Virtual Server is due to a hardware configuration incompatibility with the OS we use.

Also our IP address is not one they like us using for this OS. (They like to separate Linux and Windows and we swapped between the two a while back).

In order to speed the site(s) up they have agreed to move the virtual server and reconfigure the IP address. This may result in some downtime as DNS records will need to update to the new IP Address (anything between 8-24 hours is considered normal).

At present I am not sure when this will happen, but I will provide as much notice as possible.

Apart from the downtime (and hopefully speed increase), you should not notice any changes to the site. It may log you out if you normally automatically login.

Apologies for the inconvenience this will cause, but I'm sure you can see the silver lining in this case.

#56282 New 2015 Ford Focus

Posted by jam53ice on 24 February 2014 - 11:55 AM

Saw this on Facebook from Ford UK

So I done a little search and found this http://www.averagejo...015-ford-focus/

I do like the look of the front end!

But also the amount of driver aids this has is pretty amazing, it has 18!

I can see the Mykey being a good idea as you can have different settings for the car depending on what key is used, so if you want to let someone else use your car, you can set the max rpm, limit top speed, reduce maximum audio volume, and override deactivation of driver assistance and safety technology. (Hire car companies would welcome this idea  ;) )

#55767 Forum software licensing

Posted by trecoll on 20 November 2013 - 02:28 PM

Hi All,

In January (24th) our software license is due for renewal. This is a license to allow us access to upgrades for both for the forum system and store, more importantly this software license also keeps the anti-spam service active! As well as providing updates to the forum software as they are released (A big upgrade is due soon, 3.4.6->4.0)

Last time our renewal was due, I had forgotten to update the card details (this was July as it is a 6 month license) and the anti-spam service shut down. Within 2 days there were over 200 spam posts made on the forum!

As it is my choice to run the site, and use the server itself for other sites, I don't have any issue paying for the dedicated server we have (£17.99 a month) plus the domain renewal fee every couple of years (fiver at most!)

The issue is, the club actually ran out of money when we last paid the bill and we haven't recouped enough to be able to pay the license fee in January.

The bill will be $60, which at the moment, is just shy of £40. We have about £12.50 in the account.

The way I see it is we have four options;

  • Don't renew the license, have a hell of a lot of spam and out-dated forum software which will be more prone to attacks
  • Revert to free software, which isn't targetted as much by spammers, but will still have high hit counts and will loose a few features of this software
  • Close the forum altogether.
  • Raise some money, by way of Donations / Asking people to renew their membership who have let it lapse / Any other fund raising ideas

I'm aware there isn't much reason for keeping your membership active, as the guides are only so helpful, but the other sections are for members to use. The forum is what you make it.

When I raised the cost of membership earlier this year, I suggested the club was struggling to pay bills, this is why I decided to start paying the server costs myself.

If you so chose, you can donate as much or as little as you like in your client area, or by clicking this link: http://fordguides.co...ction=donations

Obviously, if we raise more than £40, that would be fantastic as it would save me needing to ask again come July!!
